Home Grown Gnomes…
“My name is Su and I’m the owner of Home Grown Gnomes, based in the Cambridgeshire village of Balsham.
In 2011, while living in Sweden, I volunteered to help run a tombola at a Christmas market and on my first go I won a small figurine of a gnome. I found out he was called a tomte in Sweden, a little gnome-like man from folklore. A tomte would live on the farm in one of the barns and would come out at night to help take care of the family and animals. They are very helpful if treated well but can be mischievous if you offend them. I loved the tomte tradition and soon had several more to decorate the house at Christmas. I started to make them in 2020, as a hobby to keep me entertained during lockdown, and before long Home Grown Gnomes was born.
Each distinctive gnome is made by hand and no two are ever exactly the same. Gnomes are for life not just for Christmas, so there are new designs available throughout the year. My gnomes are made from felt, with hats custom knitted or created from sock or sweater fabric. Each gnome has a base of poly pellets for added stability and is stuffed with fibre filling. Selecting the perfect faux fur beard is crucial! Gnome noses are made of wood and hands are felted balls. Their accessories range from mugs of tea or coffee, to plates of donuts or needle-felted hearts and flowers.
I also make custom gnomes with colours, hats and beards chosen by customers, along with accessories that really personalise their gnome. Recent makes have included a book-loving gnome, a gardening gnome complete with spade and bunch of carrots, and a cat-loving gnome with a mini food bowl and tin of whiskas.”
